ITV has donated an ad spot to Aldi during Sunday’s Euro 2020 final, after the German discounter’s execution featuring a football-style analysis of a BBQ was deemed the most creative of the work running during the tournament. The supermarket’s “Good swap bad swap” spot beat competition in a contest held by ITV and System1 for prime airtime. It will now appear for free – in an ad-break space worth about £150,000 – as England takes on Italy at Wembley live on ITV. More than 44 million people tuned into ITV’s coverage of Uefa Euro 2016 and the channel expects 2021 audiences to be even bigger. Aldi’s ad was judged the winner based on the use both of System1’s ad testing methodology and feedback from a representative sample of Euro 2020 viewers from the ITV Village, the broadcaster’s community of viewers.

A lifelong football fan who witnessed England lift the World Cup at Wembley in 1966 said he feels “privileged” to be working at the stadium on Sunday. Tony Stopford, 66, was 12 when he saw England beat West Germany 4-2, after his father secured tickets to the game. He told the PA news agency: “[In 1966] the day was just phenomenal, going up to Wembley, getting amongst the crowd. Other long-time football fans have shared their memories of the 1966 game and said they are looking forward to “better picture quality” on TV this time around. “They felt dazed after the match in 1966, watching the players celebrating on the pitch.

On the pitch there will be the best show for European and world football from Italy, England and the referees. “They are looking forward to taking to the field even though most of the fans present will be English. Veteran Italy duo Bonucci and captain Giorgio Chiellini, 36, will be tasked with stopping England striker Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling, England’s star performer at this tournament. The postponement of the tournament also helped Italy rebuild, he believes.

Looking at advertising campaigns on television today, an extraterrestrial from another galaxy would think they are a severe species. An extraterrestrial ad exec may rightly wonder how Earth companies sell anything at all. “They try to tell them that other emotions – including humour – are available while stocks last.”To be sure, adland is struggling. Across industries, advertising budgets are being slashed as marketing execs generate more and more byzantine metrics to demonstrate their value. Even at their most risqué, prominent ad campaigns once dictated water-cooler talk and set the cultural agenda.
